چکیده

In this study, we present an approach to retrieve wave period, phase speed at the peak of the spectrum and thus the wave age from SAR image mode precision image (PRI) data around the coast of Japan. The in-situ NOWPHAS wave gauge data is used for matching up the SAR images and for validation. The wind speed at 10m height is acquired by inverting the relationship between the radar cross section and the wind speed (CMOD-IFR model). The peak wavelength can be directly derived from the SAR image spectrum. Using the dispersion relation of surface wave, the two dimensional wave number spectra can be transformed to the frequency spectrum which determines the peak wave period. The correlation coefficient (cc) between the SAR-derived wave period and in-situ wave period is 0.73. The surface waves appeared on SAR images along the coast of Japan, usually has the dominant phase speed larger than 8m/s. The phase speed of the waves off the coast of Pacific ocean side is larger than that of Japan sea side due to the statistic long travelling distance. The multi-peak of SAR spectra gives the large error, which should be dealt with carefully.

Comparison of Geophysical Model Functions for SAR Wind Speed Retrieval in Japanese Coastal Waters

This work discusses the accuracies of geophysical model functions (GMFs) for retrieval of sea surface wind speed from satellite-borne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images in Japanese coastal waters characterized by short fetches and variable atmospheric stability conditions. In situ observations from two validation sites, Hiratsuka and Shirahama, are used for comparison of the retrieved sea su...

Surface Wave Parameters Retrieval in Coastal Seas from Spaceborne SAR Image Mode Data

Abstract— We have developed a retrieval scheme of surface wave parameters (wave height and wave propagation direction) from ERS Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image mode data in coastal seas around Japan. In this study, we investigated the energy of simulated SAR spectrum at different wind speed using nonlinear wave-SAR imaging mechanism, derived the criteria to differentiate swell from wind wa...

Preliminary Assessment of Wind and Wave Retrieval from Chinese Gaofen-3 SAR Imagery

The Chinese Gaofen-3 (GF-3) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) launched by the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST) has operated at C-band since September 2016. To date, we have collected 16/42 images in vertical-vertical (VV)/horizontal-horizontal (HH) polarization, covering the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) buoy measurements of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) aro...

Swell parameters retrieval using ALOS/PALSAR data and its application

We have developed retrieval methods for swell parameters such as wave height, wavelength, and wave propagation direction from images of PALSAR on board ALOS taken over coastal seas around Japan. The retrieval methods for wavelength and wave direction use the PALSAR image spectrum. The SAR image spectrum has an inherent 180 o direction ambiguity, which can be solved using the fact that the swell...

Use of Synthetic Aperture Radar for the Analysis of Wave Fields Atthe Coast

This work investigates the capabilities of spaceborne SAR to extract information on areas close to coastal locations, where the incoming wave fields show strong spatial inhomogeneities. For this purpose, ERS-2 SAR and ENVISAT ASAR images of the North Sea and the Bay of Biscay are used to study the ocean waves in shallow waters under different climate and oceanographic conditions. High resolutio...
